Last June, some forty participants from 20 countries took part in the first edition of the Summer School on Responsible Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, organised by Université de Montréal and Mila – Quebec AI Institute.
Over the course of a week, participants were able to exchange views with some fifteen interdisciplinary experts and explore the responsible design and deployment of AI systems. They also took part in skills development workshops and proposed responsible AI projects based on real-life scenarios. Topics covered included accountability, transparency, ethics, law and governance. The aim of the school is to encourage dialogue and the sharing of perspectives from all regions of the world. The school emphasised collaboration and the links forged between the participants, masters and doctoral students, young researchers and professionals from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, working in a variety of fields.
The School was also an opportunity to present the principles of the Montreal Declaration, and how they can be used to design AI systems that are compatible with human fulfilment. The importance of involving citizens so that they can benefit more from this technology was also highlighted.
A new edition of the summer school is due to take place in the summer of 2024.
